Provenance

Topic:
  • Counter-IUU Fishing
  • Social Responsibility
  • Traceability
Sector:
  • Technology Solution
  • Traceability Program

Provenance uses blockchain technology, along with mobile and smart tags, to track physical products and verified attributes from origin to point of sale. The Provenance application is designed to work through a simple smartphone interface – either through the Provenance application itself or by linking Provenance with existing interfaces and systems for data capture along the supply chain. The application links identity, location, material attributes, certifications and audit information with a specific item or batch ID. The data is stored in an immutable, decentralized, globally-auditable format which protects identities by default, allowing for secure data verification.

In a pilot from January to June 2016, Provenance used blockchain technology to successfully trace yellowfin and skipjack tuna fish in Indonesia from catch to consumers in the UK.

Region:
  • Southeast Asia
Harvest:
  • Wild-capture
Social Responsibility: Provenance used its traceability technology to help promote socially responsible tuna fishing in the Indonesian tuna pilot.
