The ABALOBI ICT4Fisheries Traceability Technology has been co-designed with small-scale fishers to ensure that it is relevant to their context. The traceability technology is implemented through an integrated system of customised mobile applications and online platforms which can effectively track seafood from landing site to the final consumer. It incorporates crosschecking and validation of data points across the ABALOBI Fisher App, ABALOBI Marketplace App, ABALOBI Monitor App, and ABALOBI Admin Panel online platform. The key to the success of this integrated technology is that all stakeholders along a small-scale fisheries value chain can readily track seafood moving through the traceability system. In addition, the ABALOBI ICT4Fisheries Traceability Technology enables a consumer facing QR Code to be generated that captures the unique story behind each seafood species in real time. This provides visibility for small-scale fishers and helps them differentiate their seafood products.

Social Responsibility: The ABALOBI Fisher App not only forms the foundation of the ABALOBI ICT4Fisheries Traceability Technology, it also provides a means to introduce small-scale fishers to the ABALOBI programme and help them understand the ABALOBI vision of thriving, equitable and sustainable fishing communities. This vision is underpinned by the following four functionalities linked to the ABALOBI Fisher App. Firstly the app enables small-scale fishers to co-produce knowledge by recording various oceanic, atmospheric and fisheries parameters, enter their catches into a daily electronic logbook, and utilise dashboards to visualise their data and fishing history. Secondly, the app provides a basic accounting platform where small-scale fishers can log income and expenses, thus providing these fishers with a tool to build a financial profile and prove to financial institutions that they earn an income through fishing. Thirdly, although all participating small-scale fishers using the app own their data, the platform enables them to share different data elements with various fisheries stakeholders should they choose to do so. Critically, this data can also be used by the fishers to legitimise their work, for example demonstrating to a government during a rights allocation process that fishing is their primary livelihood activity. Lastly, the app allows for various fishing community members to register and record various activities linked to marine resource utilisation. From fish cleaning services for fishers returning from sea to the small-scale production of value-added products utilising coastal and marine resources, these activities can be recorded on the app which assists in building a more holistic picture of how a small-scale fishing community functions and how benefits are distributed.
