The internet stores vast seemingly endless amounts of information, and the world is available at our fingertips through quick searches on a keyboard. However, the amount of information stored can be both a blessing and a curse, especially in regards to the overwhelming amount of information available on seafood traceability. Navigating this online rabbit hole is daunting; SALT is here to help.
SALT’s founding partners saw that traceability had the potential to become a critical tool in the efforts to mitigate illegal fishing; however, traceability progress stalled when work around it occurred without others knowing about it. Knowledge wasn’t shared, and the lessons gleaned from traceability work – such as tactics that did not work and those that were successful – were lost. SALT aims to unify traceability work in one place for a range of groups – NGOs, industry, government – to help move us toward feasible traceability solutions. We are not just another initiative, but a place to house all the other traceability initiatives so you can find each other.
What we overheard when bringing groups (NGOS, academics, government, industry) together was, in a way, validating.
“I knew about a particular organization working in Southeast Asia but had never met them. It turned out that they had just completed an important report that I was going to do myself. Instead, I was able to hit the ground running!”
Or one company, which did not initially see how SALT would benefit them, ended up partnering with another company they encountered at a SALT workshop.
The opportunities from our global meetings planted seeds for future collaborations. Relationships deepened. Connecting people across geographies and expertise got the ball rolling. SALT believes finding partners you can learn from will create significant change in this field.
We plan to be more than a repository of traceability resources from all corners of the world. We will compile new information where traceability knowledge is missing, and continue to connect people, physically and virtually. We plan to tell global stories of why traceability did or did not work. Finally, we will showcase and lead learning events to help move conversations into solutions.
